  12. Have you actually compiled from source?  I find it very strange
  13. that you should not have a pool file if you have gone through
  14. the tangle stage of compilation.  If tangle were so broken
  15. that it did not create a pool file for tex and mf, I would expect
  16. it to be so broken that it would not run at all.

  18. pool files should be generated in web2c/tex/ and web2c/mf/ as an
  19. automatic side effect of running tangle. If you have a tex.p file
  20. I don't see how you could fail to have a tex.pool file.

  22. Possibly your TEXPOOL and MFPOOL environments do not include
  23. . in the path.  That reference would be supplied in the make
  24. if you ran from the directory ../../ with respect to tex/ or mf/
  25. but if you try to run from tex/ or mf/ some environment resets
  26. may not occur. 
  27.  
  28. Is it possible that the files in the distribution you have have
  29. been "touch"ed in such a way that make is bypassing one of the
  30. stages of compilation.  If so, and if make is behaving properly,
  31. touch tex.web, and that should force a proper re-make.  but you still
  32. must run from ../../ with respect to either tex/ or mf/
  33.  
  34. Also, Is it possible that the archive version already has
  35. tex.p precompiled, or tex[0-9].c already present.  If so it
  36. is not a proper source.  get down into ../../ with respect to
  37. tex/ and make distclean (Really really clean), then reconfigure
  38. and make absolutely sure when your next make starts that tangle
  39. is actually producing fresh source code.  I reiterate, that I cannot
  40. imagine tangle working at all if it doesn't produce a [tex,mf].pool
